Rule #7 – Travel Light

Today I reviewed the Zombieland rules to see which struck a chord. Write in the moment. Write about what you are passionate about at the time. Rule #7 is the one for today.

Traveling light is a basic concept for those who travel regularly. I can’t tell you how often I have complained about how heavy my bag is. I always bring sooo much crap. Why do I do that? To be fair, I have found myself without necessities because I tried to travel light.

Zombies are after you… The last thing you need is for your bag to be too heavy. “Yeah… I’m a zombie because I couldn’t part with my hot water bottle and 67 national geographic.” Be smart. Follow rule #7 – travel light.

How does this relate to life? If it isn’t painfully obvious. Eliminate baggage.

What are you holding on to that you should really let go? Maybe a grudge. Maybe an opinion formed because of past experiences. Your baggage can be anything from your past that is currently holding you back or slowing you down.

That baggage is not YOU. It does not define you. All it is is some obstacle you refuse to let go of because of emotional reasons. Sometimes this is because you can’t forgive. You are unable to forgive someone who has wronged you. (This concept of forgiveness is for another post… But is incredible relevant here).

What might be some basic examples?

Maybe you had a bad experience as a child at a pool. Like a near drowning event. And you have never learned to swim because of it. That’s baggage. That baggage is based in fear. Understandably this would be difficult baggage to shed. But think of all the wonderful things you are missing out on… Days enjoying the pool, the lake, the beach, etc. This baggage is holding you back.

How do you identify the baggage that is most destructive in your life? How do you shed your baggage? What are examples of baggage you had and shed?

In Zombieland, if you don’t shed your baggage you are dessert.

Another aspect to traveling light is packing only those things you need.

What are those things in life that you need to hold tightly too? Loyalty? Honesty? Integrity? Maybe they are skills. Skills that need to be kept sharp.

What are those things in your life that you absolutely must keep close?

Let me know in the comments how baggage has affected you negatively and how you shed them.
